How We Compare Bookmakers
A plain-English guide to our methodology
Our approach
CrownBetsList compares selected UK-licensed sports betting operators using a consistent set of editorial criteria. The goal is to give you a straightforward, factual basis for comparison — not to push you towards any particular operator.
Every operator on this site is reviewed against the same criteria and receives an editorial score out of 10. Not every operator scores well on every point. Our scores reflect our assessment at the time of review and may not reflect subsequent changes made by the operator.
We are an independent comparison site. We are funded through affiliate commissions, which are disclosed clearly on our Affiliate Disclosure page. Commission relationships do not influence scores or review content.
Step by step: what we check
UKGC licence check
We start by confirming each operator holds a valid UK Gambling Commission licence. Only licensed operators are permitted to offer betting services to UK customers. We check licence status at the time of review and do not list unlicensed operators.
Site usability
We navigate each operator's site as a new customer would — finding sports and markets, locating account settings, checking the responsible gambling section, and testing the registration process. Straightforward navigation and accessible account controls are assessed positively.
Sports and market range
We assess the breadth of sports available and the depth of markets within each sport — including pre-match, in-play, antepost, and specials. We note whether specialist sports or niche markets are covered beyond mainstream football and horse racing.
Mobile performance
We test each operator on mobile devices via a browser and, where available, a dedicated app. We assess whether the layout is clean on a smaller screen, whether account and betting functions are accessible, and whether markets load reliably on mobile.
Payment options
We note which deposit and withdrawal methods are accepted. UK operators are required to accept debit card payments. We note e-wallet availability and any notable exclusions. We do not test actual transaction speeds, which vary and are outside our control.
Offer terms clarity
We review how clearly any advertised free bets or promotions are explained — whether terms are accessible before registration, and whether minimum odds requirements and eligibility conditions are stated in plain language. Unclear or buried terms are noted negatively.
Responsible gambling tools
We check whether tools such as deposit limits, time limits, cooling-off periods, and self-exclusion are easy to locate in the account section. UK operators are required to provide these tools by the UKGC. Ease of access is a key factor in our assessment.
What we do not assess
We want to be clear about the limits of our comparisons:
- ·We do not verify claims about odds competitiveness — these change continuously.
- ·We do not test actual payout speeds or withdrawal timescales.
- ·We do not verify payout percentages or betting margin figures.
- ·We do not test customer support response times.
- ·Our assessments are not official ratings or regulatory certifications.
- ·Our scores are not predictions of your personal experience with any operator.
What to look for yourself
Our comparison is a starting point, not a substitute for your own research. Before registering with any operator, we recommend checking:
- The operator's UKGC licence status on the Gambling Commission website
- The full terms and conditions for any free bet or promotion you are interested in
- The payment methods and withdrawal conditions
- The responsible gambling tools available and how to access them
You can verify any UK operator's licence at gamblingcommission.gov.uk.
